Soft Box Maintenance – More on the Japanese Shōji Paper Door

I wrote the other day about how wonderful the light is when filtered through a Japanese sliding paper screen door, or shōji. The down side is, being made from light wood and paper, they need regular maintenance. Or, more accurately, the paper often needs replacing.

Below is a short photo essay from when we did the doors from another room a few days ago. All the gritty image processing details under the last image. The landscape orientated photos in particular look much better clicked on and opened up (i.e. larger).

The Japan We Know And Love I – Train Time

There are certain shared experiences almost all of us have in Japan. One of them is the train commute. This is part of my ongoing series not so much of trains, but of trying to relate to the nerdy types who take photos of them. They are concerned with documenting the existence, I am concerned with documenting the experience.

Ride ‘Em, Cowboy – X100s & TCL-X100 at the Rodeo

Went to a rodeo yesterday (so obviously, not in Japan at the moment). Five colour and B&W pairs follow. Didn’t use the B&W Filter mode this time, but rather, Silver Efex Pro (so, everything from RAW this time too). Various degrees of split toning for the colour ones – just playing around with it. All X100s + TCL-X100 via Capture One Pro and Lightroom. The first bareback horse and both bull riding photos heavily cropped.

Sunshine Unagi-man

Okay, so it’s a quarter past midnight and that was the best I could come up with.

I don’t like eel, but I do like the signs typically used for restaurants selling eel. In Japanese eel is unagi / うなぎ. The first character, in the hiragana syllabary, is “う.” This is stylised to look like an eel on the signs. Having said that, the one here not so much.
